  Il rapporto prezzo utile è dato dal prezzo delle azioni di una società diviso per gli utili per azione prodotti dalla società su base annua. Il p/e rappresenta il prezzo che gli investitori sono disposti a pagare per ogni lira di utile prodotta dalla società; maggiore è il rapporto prezzo / utile, maggiori sono le aspettative degli investitori sulle prospettive di crescita di una società. Il p/e è un indicatore utilizzato dai fondamentalisti, i seguaci dell'analisi fondamentale, per scegliere le azioni, in quanto permette di comprendere se il prezzo di un titolo in borsa è alto o basso in relazione all'effettivo valore. Le azioni con un basso p/e sono ritenute dai fondamentalisti "convenienti" in quanto il loro valore reale è superiore al prezzo ( cioé valgono più di quanto costano ).
